We have established ourselves as a leading wholesale supplier of catering and janitorial materials ,The quality of service we provide is key to the success of our business and we strive to maintain this business ethic. Our own van's cover Clacton, Colchester, Mersea Island, Braintree, Stowmarket and Harwich with daily deliveries to cover all our customers needs.

We offer a comprehensive range of products, servicing most needs of pubs, hotels and industry in non food goods. We have a national coverage supplying 1000's of hotels, pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, take-aways and much more..

 

Our Story

The Thompson Cooper Ltd journey began in 1973 as a small family business by Jack and Gwladys Cooper. Jack used his redundancy money of £5000 from a previous employer to set up Thompson Cooper Ltd, their son John Cooper and daughter Margaret Dean joined the team shortly after to help the family business grow.

In 1973 we were based at Durite works, Valley road, before relocating 22 years later to our own purpose built premises on Main Road Dovercourt in June 1996. We have been here ever since. In 2019 we purchased a building next door and extended our grounds to add more parking and a lot more space for stock as our business was growing and so was our turnover.

Margaret helped start up the business with her mother and father, they couldn’t afford staff so relied on the help of family and friends such as her husband Bob and Jack’s brother Bill. Margaret helped with the payroll and sales and all running of the company and retired in 2009.  Margaret’s husband Bob stills help whenever needed if we are short staffed or he wants a coffee and a catch up, very much part of the furniture. Margaret still takes the paperwork home to help file on days we are too busy to get it finished! 

John Cooper started to work for the company 18 months after it started and eventually took over from his mum and dad Jack and Gwladys when they both retired. (Much missed) Gwladys Cooper we lost in 2003 and Jack Cooper carried on working up until the age of 90 still trying to keep up with the book work although this did have to be double checked by Joanne (accounts) until he sadly passed away in 2013.

John’s Wife Linda started to work for the family company in 1993 to help with the workload when all three of their sons were at school. John (The Managing director) goes out selling to local businesses three times a week to build up relationships that we have had over the last 50 years and to generate weekly sales. Linda is our purchasing director and helps the running of Thompson cooper with taking orders and making sure we all have stock to sell. Both still work full time and they are both just as passionate about the success of Thompson cooper ltd.

At some point all three of John and Linda’s son’s Martin, Andrew and Darren worked at Thompson cooper whether it was a stepping stone or a start of career, Andrew’s wife Justine Cooper has worked for the business for the last 10 years as a supervisor and is a vital member of the team.

Martin Cooper their oldest Son has always wanted to work for the family run company, him and his grandad (Jack) would always go through business ideas when he was little. At age 11 years old Martin would finish school and come straight up to the workplace and help any way he could. Martin was always helping during any school holiday’s any opportunity he had. Now a director and pushing the company forward in a new world he put the company online starting with eBay and then in 2011 Martin’s wife Sally started (Now General manager), and they decided to put Thompson cooper ltd on amazon. This has hugely changed the way Thompson Cooper does business seeing large sales and lots of new members of staff. Business has changed almost 50/50 to online and saved us during covid pandemic. Now Martin and Sally’s Son, Albee 4 years old ( 4^th generation) loves coming into work and helping as much as he can and is showing an interest where his Mummy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandad and Auntie Jus all work, he thinks its great fun.

Recruiting throughout the years numerous members of family and friends have been here to help Thompson cooper ltd grow, in 1983 Joanne Cranfield joined fresh out of school and is our longest serving member of staff she is still happily working for Thompson cooper ltd as our account manager and is celebrating 40 years this year working for us. We couldn’t be without her, we owe her a lot throughout the years.

Thompson Cooper now has 12 members of staff the largest we have had throughout the last 50 years, and is still very much growing. Its not been easy with different hurdles that have come along the way, the most recent being covid. But we have a strong team, good foundations and determination to work through any situations. Pushing forward always, to the next generation and the next 50 years of Thompson cooper ltd . We pride ourselves in being family run, a friendly workplace with reliable service.

 

Over the years we have had the pleasure in supplying such customers as RAF Bentwater, Sealink, P&O Ferries, Warners Holiday camps, Honda uk, Pizza express, Walton & Clacton piers and District councils in both Tendring & Suffolk to name but a few. During the past 50+ years,
